เนื้อหาย่อ : Preface to sixth edition THE PACE of technological advance continues to accelerate in our modern space-age society. In every field of human endeavor re- markable progress is achieved. Space exploration is going forward rapidly, and man is probing into the deepest part of the oceans and, beyond that, far down into the earth's crust. In the automotive field, too, this rapid pace of technological development is bringing many advances. It is no wonder that the textbooks dealing with automo- biles, such as Automotive Electrical Equipment, require frequent revision. The present revision includes the latest developments in automotive electrical equipment. There are detailed explanations of diodes, transistors, piezoelectricity, and alternating-current and solid-state phenomena, all of which enter into the operation of the modern automotive electrical system. The new equipment using these phenomena and devices is also covered in detail. This equip- ment includes magnetic-pulse ignition systems using transistors, transistorized ignition coils, ignition systems with transistorized amplifers, alternating-current generators, or alternators, with in- termal diode rectifiers, and partly and fully transistorized voltage regulators for alternators. Where appropriate, servicing information on these devices is also included in the revised edition. In the revision of Automotive Electrical Equipment, several of the chapters were almost completely rewritten to add operating and servicing information on the latest models of storage batteries, altemating-current regulators, and ignition systems using transistors. This required the addition of many new illustrations and the up- dating or replacement of many of the older illustrations. During the revision, the author was fortunate in having the ad- vice and counsel of many teachers and students who have used the book, as well as detailed analyses of the book by service experts in the automotive electrical cquipment factories. Every effort has been made to include their suggestions for improvements of the book during the revision process. Special thanks are due to Marshall Huntzinger and his staff at Delco-Remy, who supplied the author with a detailed critique of the book which was very helpful. WILLIAM H. CROUSE
