เนื้อหาย่อ : Rand called it a beautiful night for softball, but then he
would have called any night or day a perfect time to play.
The day had been windy, and dark clouds chased the
evening sun to bed early. Dust was in the air, and the wind
threw tumbleweed across the sagebrush pastureland around
the Ludell softball diamond. It rustled the trees, making a
howling noise.
Both teams appeared on time, but the menacing weather
kept most of the fans away. The teams had taken their pre-
game practice and were anxious to get the game underway
before the storm hit. According to Clyde, who was more of a
weather prognosticator than Rand and the other players,
thunderheads were forming at least thirty miles away. He
looked more concerned about the strange clouds forming
directly behind center field, but he didn't say anything.
Willie took the mound and lobbed three pitches over the
plate and motioned to the umpire that he was ready. The
first batter stepped in and promptly slammed the first pitch
to Rand at second. Rand scooped it up and tossed it to
Tommy for an easy out. The next hitter laced the ball past
Clyde, playing in close at third, but Leaping Frog raced over,
speared the ball with his throwing hand, and, in one quick
motion, fired to first base to get the runner by two steps. The
next hitter lofted a high fly to Matt in center field and
Atwood was quickly down in order in the top of the first.
