It is already part of us, and when we know how large a part of our lives comes from the past, we are richer than before in understanding. Understanding other people, and, through that, understanding ourselves. As long as there are archacologists to guide us, we cannot help lcarning and interpreting more and more about ourselyes and our neighbors everywhere in the world. As time goes on, we cannot avoid seeing more and more clearly that people are more alike than they are different from one another. When an archaeologist begins to describe a people of the past, he sets out to reconstruct a world he has never seen, and never will see. With only the smallest surviving fragments, plus his own intelligence and knowledge, he tries to bring to life again a way of living. Languages, reigions, sayings, songs, dances, and music will be lacking from his reconstructed world; at best the archacologist can only make informed guesses about such intangible things.
