DESCRIPTION OF HOLDING DEVICES
OBJECTIVES OF UNIT
To describe some of the commonly used holding devices for
drill press work.
To explain the proper application of straps, bolts, and step
blocks.
INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION
In order to obtain satisfactory results in drilling, reaming,
countersinking, counterboring, and tapping on the drill press, the
guccess of the job depends largely on the manner in which the work
is held. The practice of holding work by hand on the drill press
usually results in damaged work, broken drills, and often causes
injury to the operator.
To properly mount the work, various holding devices are.
provided; such as, , the drill press vise, "v"-blocks, straps,
clamps, bolts, and stops.
DRILL PRESS VISE
The drill press vise is the most commonly used holding device.
The work is usually supported on parallel bars (or for rough work,
on a wood block) to align the work parallel to the drill press
table, and to prevent holes from being drilled in the vise.

FIG.I DRILL PRESS VISES
Most drill press vises are constructed with a movable jaw
operated by a screw. The size of the vise depends upon the size
and shape of the work.
(F1g. 1).
Drill press vises are made in a variety of
sizes and designs.
'V'- BLOCKS
The "y"-block is a suitable holding device for clamping small
circular pleces for drilling. A yoke or clamp fits the grooved sides
of the "vli-block and has a tightening sorew to secure the work for
arilling.
