trial Revolution, technological progress has come with constantly accelerating speed.
Like amoeba multiplying in spectacular geometric progression, each invention, each
new bit of knowledge, has been the springboard for countless additional technological
advancement. By now, the pace of this expanding and radiating advance has become
so rapid that it seems likely we shall make as much progress in the next 20 years as
we did in the last 200.
One of the developments of recent years that has contributed to this explosive
progress is the contour band machine. Since its introduction in 1935 it has swept into
widespread use in more kinds of manufacturing applications than any other single
machine tool.
This is understandable because the contour band machine literally can cut any
kind of material from asbestos to zinc and because it not only can turn out a finished
product itself, but also can make machines that make the finished products.
There is a great need in industry for skilled technicians to operate these vital
band machines. There is an equally great need for better training in our schools, in
plants and in government programs to supply the skilled band machinists required by
industry. The purpose of this book is to provide that training.
At the very outset the unique principles of band machining and the band mac hine's
versatility are made clear. The emphasis is on the principal vertical and horizontal
band machines used. But because the band machine r reaches into ev
manufacturing proces ess, from machining the ra raw material to cutting the cartons that
very facet of the
package the finished product, this book also describes the techniques of operating
other band machines developed for special and specific purposes so as to present a
complete pleture of the band machinist's sphere of activity.
Although band machines must be discussed in such a textbook as this, it is not
the machine itself with which this book is primarily concerned. The objectives are
complete under-
standing of the various and nume erous applicatior ns of band machining in the multifarious
manufacturing processes in our complex machine economy.
To that end, for example, the book instructs the student in the selection and use
of carbon alloy and high-speed-steel saw bands, which are used to do the lion's share
of metalcutting, the main band machine application. However, special band tools have
been developed to extend the band machine's productivity in cutting such materlals as
glass, concrete, wood, paper, fabric, ceramic and plastic materials. So this book also
includes a discussion of these band tools and their applications to provide a complete
image of the band machinist's profession and to reveal the opportunities and challenges
awaiting him.
A band machinist is more than a machine operator with a cutting tool. He must
understand cutting fluids. He must know when to use them and when not to use them.
He must know the basic types and which ones to use with each material. Therefore,
such subjects are covered in this book too.
