There are some things in automobile electrics that cannot be undertaken by the amateur, but they are very few. With the right sort of knowledge, a few appropriate tools and just a little common sense you can achieve a great deal. The emphasis throughout is on the practical side of elec- trical maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair work. With this in mind, the theory has been cut to a minimum and practical repair information substituted. The theoretical explanations that are included are much simplified, and to the purist and anyone who really grasps the theoretical side they will seem something less than exact. However, this approach simplifies things for the beginner and has no effect at all on the accuracy of the remainder of the book. Expert and beginner alike will benefit from the practical trouble-shooting and repair aspects. Much of the information is based on the Lucas system and equipment used in British cars. Foreign electrics, however, are very similar and what differences there are involve detail Tools required have been kept to a minimum. For most testing jobs a small bulb holder with two leads, fitted with small crocodile clips, will be used. Add to these a couple of lengths of wire about one metre (three feet) long, again with clips at each end. You will need a set of spanners to fit the nuts and bolts on your particular car, plus a couple of small BA sizes; large, medium and small screwdrivers to cope with both slotted and cross-headed screws; a hammer; two pairs of pliers, one with long narrow tips (needle-nose); and a pair of wire cutters. Almost all the work detailed throughout the book can be accomplished with just these tools. The fact that the average car owner who tackles his own repair work is not a wealthy man has not been forgotten. The accent throughout is also on saving money.
