Next, the reader learns about the auxiliary systems needed to start the engine, supply the fuel, keep the engine cool and provide the other serv- ices vital to a working installation. A chapter on operating and maintaining the engine logically concludes the book. With this arrangement, the reader who already has some knowledge of the subject may, if he desires, start at a later chapter. The chapter on Governors (Chap. 16) is somewhat more extensive than those on other engine details, but I believe the extra space is justified. The usual explanation of engine govern- ing is so complicated that the subject is still a mystery to many. The basic principles, however, are quite simple. By learning these principles, as set forth in this chapter, the reader should succeed in understanding how actual governors work. The small amount of mathematics in this book is simple and in each case is accompanied by illustrative examples. AUTHOR'S NOTE ON THE SECOND EDITION Why revise this book? The answer is simple. Even though the feld of diesel and gas engines does not have the glamor of atomic energy or outer space, it too has made important advances in the past decade-advances well worth describing. For example, much more power can now be obtained from the same size engine. To do this, more air is forced into the cylinders by new supercharging methods as explained in Chapter 12. Chapter 16 tells about the various new governors for engines used in electric power stations and on locomotives, pipelines and automotive equipment. Chapter 17 describes some of the new high-power diesel engines, and Chapter 18 does the same for gas engines. Chapter 19 now includes the latest developments in electric ignition systems for high-compression gas engines; it also explains how modern power plants are sometimes fully auto- mated. Other chapters have been similarly revised to bring the book as up-to-date as possible.
