เนื้อหาย่อ : This volume is intended primarily for use at the "technical institute" or
semi-professional level for the training of electronic technicians. It is the
cutgrowth of courses given by the author at the United States Coast Guard
Training Station at Groton, Connecticut, and presently being taught at
New York City Community College.
Two outstanding features are claimed for this book. First is the styling
the author has used the same conversational or lecture style th
successful in his previous texts. The book is easy to read and stimulating
in its direct personal approach as contrasted to pedagogical and heavy
third-person presentation. Second, the emphasis is on concepts and not on
mathematical derivations. Where mathematics must be included, it is
limited to algebra and basic trigonometry.
Prerequisite to the understanding of this volume is a good foundation
in direct-current fundamentals, background in the principles of algebra, and
a basic knowledge of elementary trigonometry. Prerequisite or co-requisite,
a course in alternating-current fundamentals is strongly recommended.
As the title of this book implies, this is a tool subject and not a study
of circuit applications. The student of eiectronics should know the char-
acteristics and limitations of the various types of tubes and semiconductors
before he can appreciate their selection and application to the many va-
rieties of circuits for which each is suited. Therefore characteristics are
presented and explained per se. Mention is made as to the possible circuit
applications of each type discussed but, in general, no actual circuits are
presented.
Circuity at this point would be an error of digression and furthermore
could not be complete. For example, under "diodes," power-supply recti-
fer circuity might be included. But such a discussion would be incomplete
unless power transformers, filter circuits, doublers, triplers, etc., were also
