เนื้อหาย่อ : Basic Electronics, now in its ninth edition, is for students taking their first fun-
damental course in electricity and electronics. The book is written for beginning
students, who have no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of the subject.
Students must, however, understand basic algebra and some trigonometry. In
many schools, it is possible to take a basic algebra-trigonometry course concur-
rently with the use of this book, in a course covering the fundamental concepts
of dc and ac theory.
In this edition, troubleshooting procedures and exercises were given top pri-
ority. Troubleshooting is covered extensively in the chapters on series, parallel,
and series-parallel circuits. These chapters include detailed procedures for trouble-
shooting these types of circuits. At the end of these chapters, as well as the chap-
ter on voltage and current dividers, there is a special set of problems referred to
as "troubleshooting challenge." These new troubleshooting problems challenge
dents to determine the fault in an electronic circuit that has failed
are asked to determine the circuit fault based on voltage and current measure-
ments taken in the circuit.
Organization
The beginning chapter, "'Survey of Electronics," provides an overview of the his-
tory of electronics, describes a variety of career opportunities available in elec-
tronics, explains the most common components used in electronics, and identi-
fies some of the most common types of equipment used by professionals in the
field. The book goes on to provide complete coverage of the fundamentals of
basic electronics.
Beginning with the atomic nature of electricity discussed in Chapter 1, the
topics progress through a study of resistors, Ohm's law, series and parallel cir-
cuits, series-parallel circuits, voltage and current dividers, dc meters, Kirchhoff's
laws and network theorems, conductors and insulators, batteries, magnetism,
magnetic units, electromagnetic induction, alternating voltage and current, ca-
pacitors, capacitive reactance, capacitive circuits, inductance, inductive reac-
tance, inductive circuits, RC and L/R time constants, ac circuits, complex num-
bers, resonance, and filters.
Many other enhancements have been made to this edition. In Chapter 2,
"Resistors," there is now coverage of thermistors and power-derating curves.
om the previous Chapter 6, "Series-Parallel Circuits," the concept of posti
and negative voltages with respect to ground has been moved to Chapter 4, "Se-
ries Circuits." Also, a brief introduction to Kirchhoff's laws are provided in Chap-
ters 4 and 5, which are the chapters on series circuits and parallel circuits, re-
spectively. In Chapter 17, "Capacitance," expanded coverage on measuring and
testing capacitors has been added.
