เนื้อหาย่อ : Prime movers are what ''make the wheels go 'round" in the factories and industrial plants of the world, and the curreney of this phrase in popular speech is a tribute to the importance of the function they per- form. The turbines and engines that are the subject of this book repre- sent vast investments; key operations depend upon them; and the authors of this book have been mindful of their strategic importance as they assembled the basic facts and essential data necessary to solve the day- to-day problems that plant and industrial engineers must meet and solve. The book in its present form is frankly a "sampler"ㅡ-a fragment of the "Plant Engineering Handbook," Second Edition, edited by William Staniar. It has been taken bodily from its context, in the hope that handbook treatment accorded to a relatively specialized subject will be found of practical value by many persons who for various reasons are not acquainted with the broader content of the parent handbook. No attempt has been made to alter the page numbers, which reflect the "double-numbering" pattern of the original. . The 140 pages of this selec- tion represent but a portion of Section 12; in all there are 42 sections and 2,391 pages in the Handbook. Yet this work aims to achieve for its smaller subject the same comprehensive presentation of essential facts that characterizes the parent work. A handbook, after all, is a repository of basic information, a source of answers to questions and problems that most commonly arise. Above all, it is a work in which such facts and answers are readily available--within a single volume and in readily accessible form. Here, presented by a few of the noted authorities who have contributed their experience, their talents, and their energies to the "'Plant Engineering Handbook," is the core of what needs to be known about prime movers.
