เนื้อหาย่อ : Understanding Electricity and Electronics is a
beginning text for electricity and electronics
courses, either in the junior high school or in
e early years of the senior high school. The
xt provides the teacher with sufticient in-
structional material for a full year's course.
The book introduces the student to modern
concepts of electricity and electronics and
briefy traces the historical development of
these concepts. It shows the relationship be-
tween science and mathematics and begin-
ng concepts in electrical technology. It also
cludes basic information about the tools,
aterials, and industrial processes common
electrical and electronic work. The text
courages students to plan electrical projects
themselves; discusses the fundamental
eories of electricity and electronics; shows
ow these theories are applied in the fields of
mmunications, transportation, construction
anufacturing, and the development of elec-
cal power; and discusses occupations in the
electrical and electronics industries.
The text is divided into 11 sections con-
ining a total of 62 teaching units. Each
it is followed by a group of carefully
elected topics, For Review and Discussion,
hich offer ample opportunity to review and
ghlight the content of each unit. Where
ppropriate, the units are supplemented by
e or more suggestions on Testing Ideas About
ctricity. These suggestions are experimental-
activities that serve the purpose of saying,
effect, "Now let's see how and why it really
." The experimental activities show the
dose relationship between industrial arts and
ence and thus, through practical experi-
help the student to understand better
scientific principles involved. This corre-
on between the industrial arts and science
been stressed throughout the text. Theo-retical material is, whenever possible, followed
by one or more examples of its application to
the operation of a common electrical or
electronic device. In this way theory and
practice reinforce each other.
A word should be said about the experi-
ment suggestions, Testing Ideas About Electricity.
Each has been designed for inexpensive con-
struction with materials found in the typical
industrial arts shop or laboratory. The experi-
ments can be used for group demonstration
or for individual student work.
The units within each section are further
strengthened by Extra-credit Assignments.
These assignments are presented as sugges-
ions to encourage students to seek additi
information about topics they have studied.
Section Eleven contains suggestions for 24
take-home projects, which are designed to
provide a variety of experiences. In addition,
in Appendix B there are suggestions for plan-
ning electrical projects, and Appendix C con-
tains detailed instructions for the design and
construction of small power transformers.
The text is written and organized with
emphasis on the illustrative method of in-
struction. Each of the several hundred illus-
trations has been selected and used with this
purpose in mind. Every effort has been made
present the student with modern ideas to
about electricity and electronics and to show
how these ideas are used by industry. In ad-
dition, consumer education has been given
attention. Safety and careful work habits are
stressed whenever necessary.
