เนื้อหาย่อ : Since the first edition was published, many developments have occurred in telecommunications, particularly in relation to digital systems. Much of the fundamental theory remains, of course, unchanged, although once again there have been many signifeant adyances. The changes which have been made in this edition therefore consist mainly of additions, particularly in respect of digital systems for which a new chapter (Chapter 7) has been included. A detailed account of the theoretical advances which have been made would greatly increase the length of the book and would be beyond the target initially set, that of providing an introductory account suitable for undergraduate students. It is hoped that the present level of treatment will also be appropriate for students preparing for the Council of Engineering Institutions Part II examination, the syllabus for Section A of Subject 347 Com- munication Engineering being fully covered. A particular difficulty has arisen in relation to the last two chapters which were originally written by Dr. Glazier whose untimely death in 1971 was a severe loss to the engineering profession. His wide knowledge of communication and radio navigational systems provided an excellent basis for the material contained in these chapters. It has therefore been mought desirable to leave them substantially unchanged, apart from addition of a new section at the end of each. The original edition contained a list of references at the end of each chapter. These have now been replaced by a Bibliographical Note, ch will, it is hoped, provide an introduction to the extensive literature ailable to those who wish to continue their studies of this fascinating bect. The task of preparing a new edition has been greatly eased by the receipt of many comments both verbally and in writing. The individuals cerned are too numerous to mention but to all of them the author resses his appreciation.
