The Greeks knew that amber rubbed with fur would attract light objects, d used the word elektpoo to describe the phenomenon, from which our word electricity derived. However, it is only during the last dred years that the discovery of electricity been of real value to mankind. In the nineteenth century, Volta and Paraday discovered how to generate a con- nuous flow of electric charge. With this came e discovery of the magnetic and thermal ffects of electricity, which resulted in the ention of electric light and the electric otor. And when it was discovered that vary- g electric currents generated magnetic and ectric fields which are propagated through ce, the age of electronic communications begun,So scientific discovery presented cety with the knowledge of new methods performing physical work, providing the forts of heat and light, and communicating ever-increasing scale; and it has been, and the role of the engineer to translate these wances in scientific knowledge into devices machines useful to society. s a result of his activities, the engineer the standards of living of society and patterns of social behaviour; he must there- be aware of the social, moral and ethical uences of his work. So a study of ing must include not only the basic fic knowledge, but also the problems of g useful devices on the basis of this edge, and also the consequences of this on society. This is the theme of this book produced by the Engineering Science Development Unit. Tite the others in the series it weaves together fhe story of a major engineering system with fhe sctientific knowledge on which the system hased. It is this combination which uguishes this book from any other school text book.
