*bible', The J & P Transformer Book is the leading treatise on the power trans-
former and is an essential reference book for engineers concerned with the
design, installation and maintenance of power transformers. It is invaluable as
textbook for the architect and system planner as well as for the electrical
engineering graduate and the student.
The book started as a series of pamphlets published by Johnson and Phillips
Ltd. in 1922 entitled Transformer Abstracts, and an immediate and increasing
demand led to extensive reprinting, until in 1924 it was decided to publish the
work as a single volume. The first edition of The J & P Transformer Book
appeared in January 1925 and this was quickly followed by a second edition in
August of the same year. The continuing interest of engineers and the favourable
reviews of the electrical press necessitated further editions from 1928 until the
appearance of the eighth edition in 1941. A scarcity of printing materials during
and immediately after World War II, and the retirement of Mr. H. Morgan
Lacey who was one of the original authors, led to the book being allowed to go
out of print, although the demand for it continued. In 1958, work on the ninth
edition commenced with Mr. A. C. Franklin, at that time Chief Designer at
Johnson & Phillips Ltd, as co-author with Mr. S. A. Stigant. This edition was
published in 1961 and a revised impression appeared in 1965.
This is the tenth edition and it is almost entirely the work of Stigant and
Franklin, although credit has been given by the authors to the past work of
H. Morgan Lacey in the acknowledgements. It is now published by
Butterworths, and represents a very considerable amount of research and study
on the part of the authors in respect of the data supplied by transformer manu-
facturers and allied industries together with that made available by relevant
institutions and associations. It contains a wealth of new technical information
with tables, calculations, diagrams, line drawings and pictorial illustrations.
onversion to S.I. units has been undertaken and the whole book has been
reset and repaginated.
The information contained herein will prove even more useful to engineers
than that contained in past editions.
