simple basic scientific truths about cause and effect are applied to produce new substances, new parts
and ingenious mechanisms. Science, which at one time was largely an avocation of learned men, is today
planned, purposeful, intensive application of invention and technology by an individual, a group, or an
institution. Each seeks to translate and control the physical world by shaping it to meet man's needs.
In this quest for fundamental knowledge of man and universe, the scholar-scientist investigates,
learns, and builds upon previous knowledge. The knowledge derived is utilized by the inventor who
translates theory into fact. It then remains for the technologist, engineer and craftsman to transform
knowledge and invention into products and processes having widespread use.
"Basic Science I" is the end-product of years of extensive inquiry, study, experimentation and
analysis of the fundamental understandings about science needed by all individuals. This first volume
of the two-volume series deals with the fundamentals of applied physics. It helps provide an answer
to the question: "To what extent and in what areas should a person study the physical sciences to prepare
for a vocation, to become an intelligent consumer, and to contribute as an informed member of society?"
The units in each Section of "Basic Science I" have been specially selected to provide instruc-
tional material for a well-balanced coordinated course based on life needs. At the same time, the
scope of the units is such that the contents may be adapted to meet the special needs of students, and
to allow for progress according to varying individual abilities and desires.
Recognition is made in each unit of the value of organized laboratory work as an essential
part of a physics course. Each student has opportunities to do individual exploration, to gather data
and evidence through actual participation, to study and interpret results, and to apply both the findings
and the principles to other practical situations. Practical problem material is included with each unit.
