The material included in this volume permits its use as a text-book in bo'h elementary as well as advanced courses, and the treatment of many basic as well as spccial problcms makes it useful as a reference for practising engineers. uthor has made an attempt to present the subject which lays emphasis on the fundamentals, keeping in view dificulties confronted by the students. . A large number of illustrative solved examples have been given in each chapter. Unsolved problems with wers have also been incorporated at the erd of each chap enable the stuident to test his reading at differe at stages of his studics. Metric system ofunits has been used throughout the text and the various formulae used in the text have been derived in metric units. The author is thankful to Prof. S.C. Goyal for his kind permis- sion to use the matter of the book 'Strength of Materials and Theory of Structures, Vol. I' written by the author in his collaboration.
