เนื้อหาย่อ : This book is designed for a beginning course in finite mathematics. It may be used as a text for classes composed of students in social sciences, liberal arts, education, or business. Although reports from the Committee on the Under graduate Program of the Mathematical Association of America, the Ford Foundation, and the Carnegie Foundation suggest concepts that should be studied by these students, it is difficult to find agreement on specific topics that should be included in one textbook. For this reason, more topics are included in this book than can normally be covered in a one- or two-semester course. The individual instructor may select the material appropriate for a particular class. The book is organized so that all or parts of some chapters may be omitted without breaking the sequence of study. Several sections that are not essential to the study of the remainder of the book are marked by asterisks and can be omitted. As a guide for instructors, possible course outlinec follow this preface. This text attempts to present contemporary finite mathematics, not finite mathematics as it was first developed. As recommended in the National Science Foundation study, PRISM, this book gives special emphasis to problem-solving, utilizing problems in. ' ib~ hehavioral and social sciences as well as business. Students are encou ageu iu jormulate key questions, discover patterns and similarities, seeksout appropriate data, organize and interpret information, and analyze results: This book attempts to meet the needs of students both in content and in The chapters are arranged so that the easier concepts are presented first. The following important features are noted. 1. The book is written so that it can be read easily by the average student. The design, approach, and style were selected to increase student comprehension. 2. Each section begins with a practical example, demonstrating a reason for studying and understanding the material. approach.
