เนื้อหาย่อ : There are currently several possible approaches to the study of a first course in physics. In order to produce a textbook which would present the subject in a manner most useful to beginning students, outstanding and experienced physics teachers in parts of the United States were consulted in the preparation of this revision of MODERN PHYSICS. The manuscript was developed in response to their recom- mendations. Consequently, this book incorporates the proved subject matter of pre- vious editions with the most useful recent concepts of physics in a logical and success- ful teaching sequence. The objective in MODERN PHYSICS has always been to present physics with a directness and a simplicity that will enable every student to achieve maximum com- prehension. A real understanding of science is always its own best motivation. In preparing this revision of the text, certain comprehensive changes were neces- sarily made. Because more content in the physical science area is now being taught at an earlier stage in the science curriculum, much of the introductory material qualitatively developed in previous editions has been eliminated; the quantitative development of this material has, however, been retained. Thus it has been possible to introduce much of the new in physics, using the concept of energy to tie together all the traditional branches of the science. New chapters have been prepared on wave motion, sound, music, and illumination. An optional abbreviated section on simple machines has been retained because many teachers present this material quantita- tively in their courses. In various sections of mechanics, quantitative treatment of rotary motion has been introduced. Sections of the text which the authors class as optional are designated by the symbol Changes in the content of other chapters are too numerous to mention specifically, but the over-all result is to present physics by means of a logical organization and in thoroughly understandable prose, which will be needed by today's secondary school students. The successful use of this text is basedton the isupposition that the student has completed at least one general science course and has received an adequate prepara- tion in algebra and geometry. The elementary trigonometry necessary for the prob- lem work is presented in the text proper. A Mathematics Refresher presents a brief review of the mathematical skills required of the average physics student. MODERN PHYSICS abounds in instructional aids which are helpful to both the teacher and the student. Each unit is introduced by means of a preview photograph to point up the subject matter content. Each chapter contains a Vocabulary which de- fnes the essential scientific terms used in that chapter, and pronounces phonetically those which teachers have indicated prove dificult. This is a practical aid for the stu- dent in mastering the language of physics. As an additional aid to his understanding,
