เนื้อหาย่อ : This book is Intended to be an n introduction to prog
book that a nontechnically
gramming in the Pascal
language. It was writt ten to fill the need for a b
oriented beginner r would be able to read--and, we hope, even enjoy reading.
We have not almed at a textbook for majors in computer science: conse-
quently we do not treat topies such as data stru tructures and algorithms in any
systematic manner.
One of the featu ures of the book is that the topies s are arranged in such a
way that the exposition is alw Iways sequential, in the sense that understanding
bever depends ds on material to be co
students to read carefully as they go and not postpone understa
e covered later. We hope thereby to encourage
tanding ofsome
concepts untll later. At the same time, the material is arranged so that
students canq quickly start to write st imple programs and actually use the
computer as early as the first week of the course.
Examples of co
chapters to expose students to some of the important conc
complete programs are included at the ends of many of the
cepts of program
derelopment, structured programming, and fowcharting. We chose to utt-
hze one of the modular styles of lowcharting (essentially Nassi-Schneider-
man), since we belleve that this is helipful in gaini ning a good feel for structured
programmin ning. We have also wait ited to introduce Nowcharting untll after loops
ae discussed, since we find that students tend to feel that lowcharts are
uscles fess if they first see them used in discussions of straight-line code.
Even though this is an tary book, we deeided to present syntax in elementa
a formal way by using, with minor alterations ns, the syntax diagrams from
Jensen and Wirth's Pasc cal User Manua al and R Report. We believe that the
darity and lack of ambiguity of this approach outweigh the small amount of
afficulty that some students may initially experience in understanding the
