This third edition of Personnel/Human Resource Management con-
tains many changes and features that we believe constitute improve;
s on the first two editions. The book continues to be built around
the Personnel/Human Resource (P/HR) model developed for the ear-
lier editions. Economic conditions have been added as a fourth external
infuence in the model, along with laws and regulations, labor unions,
and labor markets. We illustrate how economic conditions shape Pl
HR activities in numerous places throughout the book.
A second major change has been the development and inclusion
of six substantive cases. They are in the areas of (1) assessing perfor-
mance, (2) external staffing, (3) employee development, (4) compensa-
tion, (5) labor relations, and (6) work design and change. The cases
are written to provide students with challenges in both problem identi-
fcation and problem solution. Extensive analysis of each case is pro-
vided in the instructor's manual.
Another change provides more integration of general business strat
egy with P/HR management, emphasizing how each infuences, and
