เนื้อหาย่อ : Mathematics to Use is a text designed for the large body of students who do not greatly profit by training in the traditional courses but who need their mathematical abilities and understandings developed to help solve the problems they will meet in their everyday living and in the jobs they will probably have. This edition of Mathematics to Use, while retaining the features that ve proved to be successful in the previous editions, incorporates ggestions of able teachers in various parts of the country, and additional modern business applications that the students are likely to meet as adults. Attention is called to the following features: Topies from the fields of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry cluded in this text. nce it is generally agreed that arithmetic is the most useful b mathematics, a broad stream of arithmetie flows through the book. This material consists of explanations, reviews, practice, and social applications. Enough algebra is presented to make students familiar with the solution of simple equations and with the evaluation of formulas. Informal geometry is studied because of its application in shops and factories and in everyday life, and for an appreciation of form and design in nature and architecture. II. The topics chosen are keyed to the mathematics used in everyday activities, as people work, play, and spend their money. The author is deeply indebted to many individuals who have helped in this important selection of subject matter. Factory superintendents, workmen, bankers, businessmen, hospital personnel, government em- ployees, as well as school administrators and teachers of various subjects, are among the people who have advised that certain topics are important r everyone to know. In addition, simple technical books were studied their mathematical content and implications. From this mass of informa- tion topics have been selected which will be helpful to the boys and girls studying this text; topics have been chosen that they are able to under- stand, and enough information and drill are given so that the pupils may master the basic material presented. III. The development of topics in Mathematics to Use is in aecordance with accepted principles of modern educational psychology. A. Much use is made of the meaning theory for introducing new concepts and shedding light upon those previously presented and but dimly per- ceived.
